“Getting to the story” – From an idea to a story with Thomas Verbogt

Every writer, from beginner to professional, knows the phenomenon; the story idea wanders around in your head, but it is elusive and cannot yet be captured in written words. In this master class Thomas Verbogt guides the participants along the path from idea to story.

Many literary components will be discussed: tension, characters and their character, dialogues, rhythm, dosage, the effect of a text. And of course: your own style, how to develop it, how to use it adventurously.

Craft & Inspiration

First of all, Thomas Verbogt will discuss the craft of writing and show how reality can help you think about a story, what to do when you get stuck, how to deepen your inspiration and make it more productive. With short, concrete exercises, he will teach how to explore your possibilities.

For the rest of the week, participants will work on a story, long or short. Joint workshops are scheduled daily, focusing on the plan everyone has and the progress they are making on it. Of course, there is also plenty of time for individual work – in the classroom, in one’s own room or under a palm tree in the shade, as one chooses. Thomas Verbogt walks around, gives advice, answers questions, cooperates, in short, can be consulted at any moment.

At the end of each day the results are discussed, both the successes and the problems. The intention is that each participant will return home after this week with a finished short story, or a finished chapter that can be the heart of a novel yet to be written.
