From playful speech to serious stand-up,
How to make comedy work for you when speaking in public.
A masterclass of Sanne Wallis de Vries
“Speaking in front of a crowd is considered the number one fear. Number two is death. That would mean that the general person at a funeral would rather be in the casket than doing the eulogy.” (Jerry Seinfeld)
It is common knowledge that speaking in front of a group is scary. Yet it can be a wonderful and even addictive experience when your entertaining speech, moving story or fine piece of stand up comedy proves to have the desired effect on your audience. It is precisely this magnificent experience that we are looking for in this master class.
Writing, deleting, rehearsing
The best public speaking words are preceded by a lot of work. Writing, deleting, rehearsing, and then the whole thing all over again… A spoken performance is successful if none of that preparation is noticeable during the performance. “It’s as if you’ve just got it out of your sleeve” is a great compliment after the performance of a text rehearsed down to the last detail. In this master class you can develop yourself as a public speaker, where the emphasis will be on the use of humor, cabaret and comedy.
Developing a stand up persona is an important part of stand up comedy. It starts with knowing yourself, your weaknesses and your strengths, and learning to see how others see you. You also develop the ability to sense what is going on, both in society and in the group you will be speaking for. Most professional comedians take years to perfect their alter ego, but this master class will certainly get you off to a flying start.
Through theater and comedy lessons, writing assignments, analysis and improvisation, you will learn to develop yourself as a public speaker, whatever your ambition is. The week ends of course with a performance by all participants in front of a real audience, with the specialty that everyone has chosen along the way: a playful speech or serious stand-up comedy!

About Sanne Wallis de Vries
After acting as a hobby and theater as a study, direct contact with the public during a Cabaret course in 1992 turned out to be a match made in heaven for Sanne. Talking to the people with self-written material is what she does to this day. She was hired in 1995 at Comedytrain, a group of comedians that Raoul Heertje gathered around her. The Cabaret course grew into a training course co-founded by Sanne and her director Selma: Theater Training Selma Susanna. In 1996 Sanne won the Leids Cabaret Festival, after which she made a series of solo performances. She also played in musicals (Foxtrot, Sweeney Todd), did film (Moordwijven, Mees Kees, Soof) and youth theater (Woest Water). She became world famous in the Netherlands thanks to her imitations of Beatrix, Femke Halsema and Connie Palmen in the television programs Kopnagels and Koefnoen. In her last two solo programs (Gut and Kom) Sanne is assisted by her now regular musicians Wouter Planteijdt and Dionys Breukers.
